How can teachers find new solutions for combining academic standards with the developmental needs of their students? Working with PreKindergarten and Kindergarten teachers at DC Bilingual Chapter School, I guided them through the human-centered design process to help uncover the possibilities. We discussed the principles and steps of brainstorming and design research, then they prototyped and tested their solutions. Their prototypes ranged from a checklist of developmental markers at various play stations where the teacher can note the students’ actions and behaviors, to a student-lead activity that mimicked their various emotional responses to specific activities. Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive and they are currently iterating with their ideas in the classroom.
